The Northern Mariners was formed around 1970 and was based on Sydney’s Northern Beaches sailing at Hinkler Park, Manly. The Club was originally a scale boat club with a sail division. The sail division sailed the Marblehead, Ten Raters and A Class. Eventually the scale club members moved on, leaving the Sail Division. The A Class members formed a new club in 1980, leaving the M’s and 10 Raters.
Northern Mariners were one of the first radio sailing clubs in Australia and was instrumental in the development of the sport. Allan Fish, most notably, won a string of Australian and State Titles in the early 1980’s in the Ten Rater and Marblehead classes as well as manufacturing world class yachts in those classes.
Northern Mariners had sailed continually at Hinkler Park apart from a short stint on Narrabeen Lake in the late 1980’s.
In 2011 with low membership and losing access to Hinkler Park, an opportunity arose to relocate the club to Mt Penang Gardens, Kariong. The Mt Penang lake had been used previously by other R/C sailing, scale and power boat clubs up until about 1993. The Australian R/C Sailing National Titles were held there in January 1992.
Northern Mariners held their first official Ten Rater regatta at Mt Penang in April 2011, and now has a regular club and regatta race program in place. The club currently races Ten Raters only, but members also own Marbleheads, IOM’s, and A Class yachts and regattas have been held at Mt Penang for all these classes since relocating to Mt Penang.
